INTRODUCTION,
~
New-Brunswicg, the Capital of Middlesex County, is situated on the westerly bank of the Raritan River, about twelve miles from its mouth. It lies in 40° 49’ north latitude, longitude west from Greenwich 70° 49’; thirty miles by rail from New-York City,, forty-five by water. Near the close of the seventeenth. century the ground now occupied by this City was: covered with trees and swampy bushes, and was known by the name of its proprietor, ‘‘ Prigmore’s Swamp.” In the year 1681, Joun Intan & Company secured a plot of ground, containing about a mile of river front, and two of depth. In 1697, a ferry was established by grant from the Jersey Proprietors, during the lives of InraAn and wife. This ferry was kept by one DANIEL Cooper, who was the first inhabitant of this City of whom any record has been preserved. One of the first houses was erected at the foot of Town Lane,
NEW-BRUNSWICK DIRECTORY.
(Commercial-avenue,) and several other buildings were built soon after in Albany-street, which have within the last few years been demolished. In 1730, or there- about, some Dutch families emigrated from Albany, New-York. The majority of these built on the post- road, from which fact was derived the name of Albany- street. They also brought with them the bricks, tiles, é&c., for building.
The City of New-Brunswigk was first incorporated by the Legislature in 1784, although a charter of in- corporation had been procured under royal favor, by WIiiaM BurRNETT, as early as 1736.
The population of the City at the present time is about 18,000. There are about 3,500 children in the City between the ages of 5 and 18 years. The whole number of scholars enrolled in all the schools in the City, public and private, 2,818, with an average at- tendance of 1,700. There are four public and thirteen private schools, Hertzcg Theological Seminary, Rut- gers College, and Rutgers College Grammar School. There are fourteen factories of various kinds, employ- ing about 2,500 persons. Two daily, three weekly, and one monthly papers, and a monthly magazine. Fire Department, four steam engines, two hand en- gines, one hook and ladder, and five hose companies. This Directory contains 4,250 names, over 1,0C0 more
NEW-BRUNSWICK DIRECTORY. than in the Directory published two years ago. There are sixteen Churches, viz: three Reformed, two Pres- byterian, two Episcopal, one Baptist, four Methodist, {one for colored people,) one German Reformed, two Roman Catholic, and one Jewish Synagogue. Two Banks, one Savings Institution, two Insurance Com- panies, nine Building Loan Associations, ten Incor- porated Institutions, two Lodges of Free Masons, one Chapter, one Council, one Commandery, one Lodge of Odd Fellows, one Order of United American Me- chanics, two Divisions of Sons of Temperance, one Temple of Honor, two Lodges of Knights of Pythias, one Post of Grand Army of the Republic, one Lodge of Knights of St. Crispin, and eleven Benevolent So- cieties. Our Business Directory contains the name of every business firm in the City, so faras the canvassers have been able to ascertain. There have been some business changes since the work was commenced, and when it was too late to note them; otherwise the book is reliable. On the whole, we believe it to be the most correct Directory of the City ever issued. That some mistakes will be found, we do not doubt; such will oc- cur in the printing of any statisticai book, however carefully compiled, but more especially in a book of this kind. Many persons, for peculiar reasons, refused to give their names altogether, while owing to the ig-

norance of others it is almost impossible to spell their names correctly—more especially is this the case among the German families.
